Is Writing About Mental Illness in a College Essay a Bad Idea?
Is Writing About Mental Illness in a College Essay a Bad Idea? For those who write about mental illness in a college essay, should they discuss the fact that they have been diagnosed with it? Or do they have to abstain from discussing it?The answer to the second question may be wrong, and that is partly because some of the people who write about mental illness in a college essay may not even know that they have been diagnosed with it. It is certainly true that many college students and young adults today are experiencing stress and emotional problems. But many do not know that they are having problems, and that is why they are particularly at risk for coming into contact with the wrong people. There are those who claim that the college essay writer should always 'spit out' the fact that he or she has been diagnosed with a mental illness. Some claim that the college essay writer should speak openly about the fact that he or she is an ex-mental patient. For others, it is the mental healt h status of the student. Still, others prefer not to talk about their diagnosis. What about those who claim that discussing mental health issues is not safe, but rather it is not the right time to discuss it? This is because one can only discuss these issues if he or she is fully healed. Even if a person has never suffered from a mental illness, he or she should still be able to talk about what has been happening in his or her life. For this reason, some health professionals will not allow one to discuss these things in a college essay. There are also those who consider talking about mental health issues is wrong and unhelpful. Such people may be afraid that the education and knowledge about mental illness that they get by reading essays will ultimately damage their mental health. On the other hand, some people feel that students should be encouraged to write about these issues. There are those who say that the college essay writer should write about mental health in a way that does no t damage his or her career. Others believe that writing about mental health should not take place as long as the person is suffering from these problems. Others may also think that if a person can write about such issues, he or she should be allowed to continue living his or her life as normal as possible. Some will argue that the college essay writer should not worry too much about how others view him or her, but rather focus on what he or she can do to improve his or her situation. Some people say that those who write about mental illness in a college essay can get away with their topic, because their names may have been changed. These people however argue that those who continue to hide their identities will eventually get themselves branded as 'mentally ill.'
